ARTEDU 2367.03 Criticizing Television
-This course critically examines television by viewing it, discussing it, reading about it, and writing about it. The specific focus are the ways in which issues of social and diversity are constructed/presented on American television. This the class takes television seriously, recognizing the significant influence this medium has on our individual and social experiences. The course considers all program types, including news, sports, reality TV, advertising, talk shows, comedies, and dramas, exploring how each is “used” both by viewers and producers. Students learn how to write persuasively to convince people to believe their analysis of TV shows. Curriculum focuses on social diversity, persuasive writing, and cultural criticism because those are the general education (GE) skills this class was designed to fulfill.

GRNP5000, 5001, 5002, 5003: Graduate Seminar I, II, III, IV
-graduate critique seminar required of all matriculated MFA students. Graduate students will meet weekly for presentations, critiques, and discussions of current in-progress projects. Various topics and visiting artists will be introduced. Students are expected to take a strong leadership role.
GRNP5070: Professional Practices
-Oriented to individual student needs and goals this course addresses the tools and skill sets students will need for success after graduation. Issues of entrepreneurialism, marketing, and leadership are covered along with the practical application of creative/business partnership.
GRNP5007: Studio Projects I
-A project-based, individually mentored course that is focused on planning, production, and presentation of independently proposed, semester-long projects. Students develop a project proposal and work with individual faculty to realize the semester's project. Emphasis is on one-on-one contact and feedback with the chosen faculty. This is the core production course of the MFA: New Projects curriculum during the first year.
GRNP5008: Studio Projects II
-The second semester of the Studio Projects course develops a second new project. Students develop a project proposal and work with individual faculty to realize the semester's project. Emphasis is on one-on-one contact and feedback with the chosen faculty. This is the second semester of the core production course of the MFA: New Projects curriculum.
GRNP5099: Off Campus Mentoring or Practicum
-Course advisor for: The Off-Campus Mentoring program is designed to offer alternative critical insight, mentoring, and/or experience. A list of artists, scholars, and organizations that have agreed to work with CCAD MFA students on an individual basis is available. Contact with off-campus mentors can be real, virtual, or some combination. Continued follow up with students before, during, and after experience.
GRNP6070: Thesis Projects I
-The first of two courses that culminate in the MFA Thesis Project, Thesis Projects I focuses on the initial thesis project proposal, development, and implementation. Students will choose their thesis advisor, develop their thesis proposal, and complete their pre-thesis review. Emphasis will be placed on the highest professional standards of development, planning, and execution.
GRNP6071: Thesis Projects II
-The second of two courses that culminates in the MFA Thesis Exhibition, Thesis Projects II focuses on the final thesis project development and exhibition. Emphasis will be placed on originality and the highest professional standards of development and execution.
FS1057&1058: Foundation Studies – Design (2D & 3D)
-Design focuses on complex 2-D, 3-D and 4-D design issues. Through individual projects, group projects, written work and oral presentations, students expand their ability to unite form, concept, and meaning. Further explorations of digital media applications, safe studio practices, and competency with various 2 -D and 3-D materials will be developed and expected. This required course serves as a prerequisite for select upper level courses.
CPS and Admissions Lecture Series: Portfolio Development
-Lecture series developed to assist pre-admission students with the portfolio process. After lecture, portfolio review and follow up with attendees.

ART 330: Intro to Glass Blowing
-This course provides a basic studio introduction to glass blowing methods and history. It is a practical introduction to utilizing glass as material for artistic expression. Over the duration of the quarter, the student will be developing the skills used in molten glass forming, including; gathering, hot sculpting, sand casting and coldworking. While learning techniques and simply what is possible, students will also be sketching and working on assignments.
ART 331: Intro to Glass Construction
-This course provides a basic studio introduction to glass construction methods and history. It is a practical introduction to utilizing glass as material for artistic expression. Over the duration of the quarter, the student will be developing the skills used in cold glass forming and use of preformed glass, including; cutting, grinding/coldworking, gluing stained glass and sculpting techniques. While learning techniques and simply what is possible, students will also be sketching and working on assignments.
ART 332: Intro to Glass Forming
-This course provides a practical introduction to utilizing glass as a material for artistic expression. Studio practice is focused on experimentation with glass forming methods which include: glass fusing, bending, and casting techniques. Students will gain experience with the use of color and presentation in glass art and object making.
ART 340: Ceramic Art: Hand forming
-Art 340 is an intensive beginning level studio course that introduces students to clay as a material for creating art. Students will develop a fundamental understanding of ceramic hand-building by utilizing various modeling and hand-forming techniques to explore issues of form, surface, content, design, and history of the material. This course will focus on gaining an understanding of the technical aspects of working with red low-fire clay, slips, and glazes. Students will learn through hands-on experiential investigations with the materials via assigned projects and exercises. There will be approximately three in-depth projects and several mini-exercises over the course of ten weeks.
ART 342: Ceramic Art: Wheel throwing
-Art 342 is an introduction to the ceramic arts through the focus of Wheel Throwing. This course will cover a range of techniques through both lectures and studio learning. The purpose of this course is to develop your familiarity with the potter’s wheel as a tool for visual expression. All wheel thrown forms, whether sculptural or utilitarian require a basic skill and understanding of clay. In order to focus your efforts in developing skill on the wheel, we will limit our objects to basic forms and shapes. These will become building blocks for more complex works. An important part of this course will be the development of a working relationship between surface and form.
